MALCOLM X.
OUTLINE OF MALCOLM'S SPEECH, "THE BALLOT OR THE BULLET."
Autograph Manuscript, 10 pages, octavo, n.p., [1964], being the
outline of Malcolm's speech, "The Ballot or the Bullet," pages toned,
stain to first and last page from clip, otherwise fine.
After
his break with Elijah Muhammed and the Nation of Islam, Malcolm revised
his message to encourage the black community to flex their political
muscle--particularly through voting. (Elijah Muhammed discouraged the
black community from voting, arguing that the entire American government
system was corrupt.) Malcolm, after the break, organized both the Muslim
Mosque, Inc. as a religious organization, and the OAAU, as a political
entity. In part: " This is the year of The Ballot or the Bullet / 1.
First: my personal position / 2. Still a Muslim, Islam / 3. Still credit
MM [muslim]movement for what I know & what I am ... I am a Black
Nationalist Freedom Fighter / 1. Islam is my religion--my personal
business / 2. It governs my personal life, morals ... My political,
economic & social philosophy is Black Nationalism ... Nationalism
brought freedom to the formerly colonized people of Asia & Africa.
BN will bring freedom to the 22 million Afro Americans who have suffered
400 years of colonialism here in America ... Negro vote, key factor--yet
nothing in return ... Dems control 2/3 of House & Senate / Get Negro
support, yet Negroes get nothing ... My Gospel BN 2. Join any organ.
where this is being preached & practiced ... 1. Convention in Aug.
2. United Front of all groups 3. BN Party or BN Army (Ballots or
