MALCOLM X.
LARGE COLLECTION OF SPEECH OUTLINES.
Approx. 200 Autograph
Manuscripts, 820 pages, most legal folio, various places including New
York, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Los Angeles, n.d., being outlines and
notes for speeches given at the Nation of Islam temples and public
rallies, some cuts, creasing to edges, pages thumbed overall.
This lot features an impressive collection of Malcolm X's notes
and outlines for the many public speeches he gave during his career with
the Nation of Islam. As Malcolm became more and more confident as a
speaker, he needed less and less preparation of his written material.
Nonetheless, Malcolm approached each appearance with a clear agenda,
whether discussing the mythos of Elijah Muhammed and the Nation of
Islam, the moral reformation of the black community, the significance of
the Bible as a religious text for Muslims, the issues of separation and
reparations, or the Kennedy administration's manipulation of the Civil
Rights community for its own ends. In several manuscripts, Malcolm
addresses the lynching of NOI member Ronald Stokes by the LAPD. Stokes,
secretary for LA's Mosque #27, was stopped by police coming out of a dry
cleaners where he worked. He was harrassed, beaten, and shot by
officers, who then proceeded to assault other unarmed members of the
Temple. In once speech, Malcolm likens the Stokes incident to the
rampant attacks on blacks in the south. In part: " Murder of Ronald
T. Stokes & the cold-blooded shooting of six other unarmed negroes
... What are Negroes Saying (America, Africa & Asia)? That Ronald T.
Stokes was lynched by the LAPD just like Emitt Til & Mack Parker in
Mississippi. / 1. Only difference: Mississippi did their lynching
undercover, where they couldn't be seen. / 2. These uniformed lynchers
lynched Ronald T. Stokes in public, right before our eyes (slapped the
Negro Community in the face):/ A. Play our intelligence cheap / B.
Unarmed man attacked well-armed police (no weapons in hand, & they
well-armed with guns and clubs) / C. Shot up 'place of religious
services': found no weapons. / D. Then: turn you against us: we
anti-Negro, anti-American, subversive, violent, & teach hate...."
