MALCOLM X.
HANDWRITTEN DRAFTS OF RADIO ADDRESSES.
67 Autograph
Manuscripts, 752 pages, legal folio, various places including New York,
Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Washington, DC, Springfield, MA, and
Phoenix, n.d., being drafts of Malcolm's radio addresses, pages thumbed,
edges chipped and creased.
In addition to developing a national
newspaper for the Nation of Islam, Malcolm coordinated a weekly radio
broadcast to spread the mesage of Elijah Muhammed. Originally, Muhammed
himself addressed his listeners, most often from his Mosque in Chicago,
but as Malcolm rose in his teacher's esteem, he took over more and more
of the media duties. These manuscripts are drafts of Malcolm's radio
addresses on a variety of issues, including the divinity and teachings
of Elijah Muhammed, the necessity for a disciplined life, the need for
economic as well as spiritual progress, fundraising, and the
appropriateness of Islam for Southern blacks. From an address delivered
from the Atlanta mosque: " Why is Mr. Muhammed's message, the
religion of Islam, spreading so rapidly among our people here in the
Deep South? One reason is: because our people here in the South want a
change; they are ready for a change.
Our people here in the South
want a religion that will give them salvation... but they want that
religious salvation also to include some freedom, justice & equality
here in this life .. and right here on this earth.
And realizing
that the Christian church has failed them--today are people are turning
back toward the age-old religion of Islam, the religion of our
forefathers, the religion of the wise men of the East, the religion of
all the prophets, the religion of God himself...."
