MALCOLM X.
MALCOLM ON MARRIAGE.
2 Typed Letters Signed ("Malcolm X"
and "Bro Malcolm X"), 3 pages, quarto, East Elmhurst, NY, March 5 1955
and December 22, 1957, to Sister Beatrice, many phrases typed in red
ink, pages creased and soiled.
Malcolm writes to one of the
Muslim sisters at Temple commenting on his ceaseless work for the
Nation, and how his dedication to the cause prevents him from marrying.
From 1955: " Most of these young Sisters should just throw me out of
their minds, and go out and bring in the DEAD. We are rewarded according
to our DEEDS. If we serve ALLAH HE will bless us with the fulfillment of
our greatest desires. I don't worry about any particular Sister, because
I know that ALLAH will bless me with WHOM HE WILLS when HE SEES FIT, as
long as I serve HIM and obey His Holy Apostle. I'm thinking about
spreading Islam, not about marriage." And from 1957, not long before
he marries Betty Saunders: " Today I am very careful about answering
letters of single Sisters, or even writing to them, for I don't want to
build up false hopes in them in the 'wrong way,' for though there is
always much talk to the contrary I am not looking for any wife at the
present time, and most single sisters are looking for a husband ...
which is only NATURAL, and I well understand and sympathize with them,
but not to the extent where I'm willing to 'sacrifice' myself on the
altar just to make one individual sister happy (smile)...."
