MALCOLM X.
LETTERS FROM PRISON TO HIS BROTHER PHILBERT.
13 Autograph
Letters Signed ("Malcolm," "Malcolm Little," "Malcolm X. Little," and
"Malcolm X"), 55 pages recto and verso, quarto and octavo, Norfolk, MA,
November 28, 1948 to January 15, 1952, most to his brother Philbert (one
to Philbert's new wife, Henrietta), with original transmittal envelopes,
pages creased and thumbed, envelopes chipped and soiled.
These
letters written from prison chart Malcolm's spiritual growth after he
converted to Islam and began a serious study of the Koran and other
religious texts. Most of the letters discuss theological issues;
occasionally Malcolm reminisces with his brother about their childhood.
In a letter dated December 12, 1949, Malcolm mentions that, in her way,
their mother must have also been a follower of Islam. In part: " It
makes me feel good (encouragingly) to hear the Brothers there think I
was in contact with Islam before my seclusion.... for they are correct.
We were taught Islam by Mom. Everything that happened to her happened
because the devils knew she was not 'deadening' our minds. When she
refused those two pigs from Mr. Doane that time I thought she was crazy
myself (as hungry as I was); and they sowed their lieing (sic) seeds in
our heads ... but she suffered the abuse of all ... even incurring the
worst degree of the devils' fury ... unto death, all for your sake. Tis
tru, that my accomplishments are yours, and yours are mine .. because we
are all brothers and sisters .. but all of our achievements are Mom's ..
for she was a most Faithful Servant of Truth years ago."
